Collective Worship
Heart for the Earth
At Christ Church School, caring for God’s creation by looking after the environment is so important. Through our whole school and class worship times and as part of our lessons inside and out of the classroom we learn how to care for the planet on both a local and global scale.
Heart for the Earth resources
We have used the Heart for the Earth resources from the Diocese of St Albans as a focus for our Collective Worship. Pupils have been encouraged to use their ‘heads, hearts and hands’ to respond to the Climate Change crisis.
In our collective worship and across school life, we are exploring what it means to have a ‘Heart for the Earth’.
We have been thinking about why it is important to look after the planet we share. This half-term we have had a particular focus on wise use of electricity.
In collective worship, we will consider the following questions and quote:
'Know that you are incredibly lucky to be alive at a time when you can make a transformative difference to the future of all life on Earth. You are not powerless. Your every action is suffused with meaning, and you are part of the greatest chapter of human achievement in history’ (Christiana Figueres)
Do you think it is important to show a heart for the earth? Why? How might you show a heart for the earth in your thoughts and actions?
In our collective worship, we have been thinking about how we can show a ‘heart for the earth’ through our use of electricity.
Hear your child’s ideas about how electricity can be saved.
If you’d like to, below are some ideas to further encourage a heart for the earth.
Spend time outside with your children this Autumn. The stronger our connection to the earth, the more likely we are to care for it. Some ideas of what you could do:
- Go on a colour hunt, looking for plants and leaves of different colours
- Look closely at the natural world. Perhaps this could be a scavenger hunt (e.g. flower, berries, animal footprint, bird song) or a game of ‘I spy’ Take time to ‘be’ outside.
- Be still and notice what you sense, touch, see, smell
